ft-Smith-Wollensky-1200x630

American steaks and wines are on the menu in this new must visit, set just back off The Strand in the Adelphi building.

With an art deco, high end feel, Smith and Wollensky has to be added to your list of must visits if you like yourself a bit of meat.

With 9 restaurants in the States, this is the firs in the UK based in the historic Grade II-listed Adelphi Building.

At new Smith and Wollensky, as well as a very warm Stateside welcome you can expect menu of signature USDA Prime dry-aged steaks alongside Scottish cuts, premium seafood, award-winning wines and classic cocktails.

At the heart of every Smith & Wollensky is the dry-ageing process and London is no different with both a dry-ageing room and a butchery on-site for true field to fork traceability. Selected from the top 2% of beef in the US for its rich and even marbling, the USDA Prime is dry-aged for no less than 28 days to intensify flavour and increase tenderness for the very best steaks in London.

The menu itself is a cut above the rest: USDA Prime steaks range from 21oz NY cut bone-in sirloin to 24oz Cajun marinated bone-in rib steak while British cuts include a 8oz/12oz premium Scottish fillet mignon served au poivre, gorgonzola-crusted or ‘oscar’ – piled-high with crabmeat, asparagus and hollandaise. Butcher’s specials – chalked up on a board, old-school style – vary regularly from T-bone steaks to a Porterhouse while other carnivorous choices include new season lamb chops, roasted rose veal chop and the signature Wollensky’s burger.

The menu also offers an extensive selection of fish and seafood: herb-crusted tuna loin sits alongside ocean- fresh premium shellfish such as Cumbrae oysters, jumbo shrimp, whole Dorset crab to share and lobster. Try a signature shellfish platter to make the most of the coast: platters of varying sizes include the likes of lobster, crab, oysters and clams served over crushed ice. Sides are by no means sidelines, either – the buttermilk onion rings and truffled mac ‘n’ cheese to share are the stuff of legends.

Desserts, meanwhile, include a gigantic chocolate cake that will encourage even those with the strictest willpower to ditch the diet alongside similarly sweet treats such as New York-style cheesecake and fruit tart.

A great time to try S&W is on the weekends with their Bottomless Brunch... With Beef. An American steakhouse twist on brunch including a lobster BLT roll and a sirloin steak with two free-range hen eggs. The bottomless Sunday roast brings a choice of two or three courses with unlimited red and white wine; start with crispy salt and pepper squid followed by USDA Prime roast rib of beef, horseradish cream sauce and a Yorkshire pudding for main. A super Sunday by both British and American standards.

Gaucho-Piccadilly_Restaurant_2

Hidden away on Swallow Street, just off Regent Street is on of a few Gaucho's in London. Brimming with cow hides, golden lighting and shiny surfaces, Gaucho is somewhere you'll want to keep in mind if you need some sustenance mid shopping spree.

Specialists in Argentinian steak (and wine!) you are sure to get you belly filled with one of their many cuts of excellent meat. They also however, do roasts, which is something you may not have known.

Gaucho in Piccadilly WJ London

The Roast menu offers a number of different meats, and vegetarian option, and even a shepherds pie which is a nice change with two courses for £23.

Gaucho is a great roast option when you have had enough of pubs - this is far more up market in surroundings (of course) and will feel like a real treat as your enormous roast is put down on it's wooden block in front of you.

Staff are very knowledgable and will explain meat cuts to you if you wish, they will also guide you through their extensive wine list.

We must put in a special mention for the caramelised pineapple and rum and raison ice cream though.

Ember Yard, the fourth venue from Salt Yard Group, is delighted to welcome steak restaurant Flat Iron for a one night pop up on Tuesday 7th October. The menu will feature ten different cuts of Dexter breed beef, from Flat Iron’s very own herd in Yorkshire, offering guests the opportunity to try some rare and lesser known parts of the animal.

The 34 month old pedigree Dexter selected for the event has been on a bespoke finishing diet of barley, molasses and beer for the last nine months and will be butchered in Flat Iron's restaurant on Denmark Street. Located on Berwick Street in Soho, Ember Yard specialises in Spanish and Italian methods of cooking over charcoal.

Chef director Ben Tish and head chef Jacques Fourie of Ember Yard have worked with Flat Iron to experiment with a variety of techniques such as smoking and grilling to prepare the unusual cuts of meat. Dishes include: a selection of grilled cuts of Dexter beef, served with beef dripping potatoes and smoked butter; and slow cooked short rib and shin with wild mushroom polenta and cavolo nero.  For bookings, please contact Ember Yard on 0207 439 8057 or email info@emberyard.co.uk.
