Walk tall. Flex your muscles. Talk in a deep voice. Do you feel like a real man now?

Wellcome Collection’s next late night event on 7 April will be wrestling with emotions and exploring the complex science of masculinity. Artists and experts will sit alongside drag kings and choirs to challenge every assumption about what it means to be macho, from the celebratory to the damaging.

Event highlights include:

  • BROMANCE, a rolling drag king cabaret curated by Milk Presents, with live performance from LoUiS CYfer, The Great White Males, and many more special guests. Visitors can create their own king persona with costumes, packing materials, make-up and expert advice on tap throughout the night.
  • Real Men Used to Cry: an expert talk busting the myths about men and emotion, tracing the history of male mental distress and challenging the dominant depictions of masculinity.
  • Talks from the Domestic Violence Intervention Project and the GREAT Men Initiative, two organisations seeking to tackle negative and damaging manifestations of masculinity in our society.
  • Pop-up choir performances by Chaps Choir and barbershop group Capital Chorus, artist-led making activities and interactive games inspired by real testosterone research.
  • A long table discussion on why femininity in a male body can be so threatening and an interactive experience from Wellcome Collection’s youth programme, RawMinds, created in collaboration with award-winning theatre company non zero one.

This is a special late-night event and the bar will be open all night. The majority of activities are drop-in but some talks and activities require booking. Online booking will be available from 11.00 on Friday 31 March.

Macho? will take place on Friday 7 March 2017, 19.00-23.00 at Wellcome Collection, 183 Euston Road, NW1 2BE.


It is clear that Nigel Cabourn's collection epitomises British heritage, particularly inspired by the attire worn by the British military. The collection resembles what a soldier would wear in the early 20th century. This look and idea was accentuated by the models who modelled the clothing looking confidently.


It is clear that in pulling off the Nigel Cabourn's collection, one must be confident. There was a distinctive theme in his presentation shown by the colour’s which consisted of mostly browns and khaki greens.  I'd say that overall the collection is smart wear but also clothing that one can easily be worn in the woods.


Although inspiration has clearly been taken from fashion in the 40s and 50s era, there is still an evident modern feel to the collection. This contrast is what makes the clothing line very unique, simultaneously the clothing caters to both young and older men. Despite this the collection maintains its modern feel with one model wearing a snapback, a navy bomber jacket and a denim shirt printed with different patterns. His collection is divided into three different parts: Authetic, Lybro and The Army gym.


Simplicity is key with Cabourn’s collection, from the colour’s to the style of the clothing. Less is most definitely more and as displayed in the collection, extremely chic. Additionally, to add to the clothing, Cabourn’s pairs them with accessories such as backpacks and little satchels, to go with the theme of war. As well as having bags, a very important accessory is clearly the head wear. There are a selection of hats that complete the entire collection.




In all, if you want to be bold and daring then Cabourn’s collection is the right place to start.

For the first time ever, artworks from Ruinart’s six recent artist collaborations including Herve Van Der Straten, Ron Arad, Piet Ein Eeek and Georgia Ruseel will be shown together at its inaugural Lighthouse exhibition; which will be open to Consumers 9th to 11th February.

The experience will compromise of a series of sensory rooms allowing visitors to discover the history and origins of Ruinart champagne as well as the Chardonnay grape in general. There will be several rooms of creative installations, a display of artworks created by famous artists for Ruinart and a tasting room with a menu curated by a notable chef.

The Lighthouse will open between 9th - 11th February 2016. Consumer ticket sales are set to go live on www.ruinart.com on 11th January 2016.  The £35 entrance fee includes a tasting with Ruinart cellar master Frédéric Panaïotis of the Ruinart Blanc de Blancs, Ruinart Rosé NV, Dom Ruinart 2004 and Dom Ruinart Rosé 2002.

‘Neo-Victorian Maximalism’ by Steve Mitchell

‘Neo-Victorian Maximalism’ is the first solo show from Fiftyseven, the pseudonym of London based illustrator, typographer and graphic designer Steve Mitchell.

Fiftyseven’s unique style is built from a dizzying mix of decoration, pattern and symmetry and typography, an overload of quasi-religious,  occult and masonic symbolism and anything else that fits. Working with a restricted colour palette and especially favouring metallic inks, his screenprints are usually based around a simple visual concept, revealing more and more detail the closer you look.

Fiftyseven developed the illustration style he calls Neo-Victorian Maximalism when a love of 19th century typography led to designing flyers for steampunk events. From there came the desire to “push the aesthetic as far as it could go, to the point of absurdity”. He’d like to say he’s inspired by the whole history of art and design, but really it’s mostly just heavy metal album covers... further influences include Ian Miller’s intense Tolkien art, the book illustrations of Harry Clarke and (of course) the wood engravings of Gustave Doré.

Steve Mitchell

Steve Mitchell grew up and was educated in the North East of England, graduating with a degree in graphic design in 1997. Since moving to London at the end of 1999 he has primarily worked as a designer in the live music industry, creating artwork for numerous festivals, including Latitude, The Big Chill and Sonisphere, as well as logo design, the occasional album cover and original typography for magazine covers, usually Classic Rock or Metal Hammer.

Recent LCC graduate Corin Kennington’s first solo show; Layers, Letters and Forms is a visual exploration into the aesthetics and processes of typography.

Focusing on the physicality and hand-made elements of traditional methods, Corin’s work is created using a range of techniques such as letterpress, screen printing, risograph and hand painted letterforms. His recent body of work explores the journey of creating an image through the combination of old and new processes, and developing ways of unifying digital aesthetics and systems with traditional methods of print and execution. Throughout Layers, Letters and Forms, Corin uses typography as a visual form as opposed to a language or tool of communication.  

Corin: ‘My work explores combining a passion for craftsmanship and traditional methods with contemporary design systems and techniques’. 

The exhibition runs from the 28th January until the 20th March 2016
