Here Comes The Sun - The Cider Box presents: first ciders of 2016.

Saturday 26th March, 12noon-7pm.

Join us to celebrate the banishing of daylight saving nonsense for another 6 months, and the impending goodtimes clock that is British Summertime.

It's no coincidence that this annual festivity falls on the same part of the month where for centuries, the first CIDER become ready after spending the long cold winter tucked away in cider houses and barns across the country. We'll be unleashing the first of 2016's ciders & raising a glass or three to the forbidden fermented fruit, by holding a cider festival like no other on March 26th, on the roof of Queen of Hoxton, under the canvas of the Wigwambam. Tickets get you 4 halves of delightful cider , a tutored tasting session with complimentary cheese, and a delicious plate of mouth watering food from the open fire.

The Water Poet Cider Festival (Saturday 29th August - Monday 31st all day from 12pm)

The Water Poet Bank Holiday Cider Festival and Hog Roast returns this year to celebrate the August Bank Holiday and all things cider! From traditional scrumpy to the funkiest of flavours, The Barn will be overflowing with a who’s who of the best new and classic cider producers around.

A scrumptious hog will be spit roasted in the sunny beer garden and there will be a steel band daily from 6pm for those who want a touch of Notting Hill Carnival (but without the stress). Grab a cider or perhaps one of our special cider cocktails, pull up a hay bale and enjoy the best cider related bank holiday weekend ever. There will also be ice cream available from the Drunken Dairy including their very own mango and cider flavour!
An extensive and supremely delicious selection of craft ciders from a variety of producers all over the UK will be available, including Herefordshire’s Abrahalls cider, Welsh purists Hallets, fruity Annings from the West Country, Devon’s Sandfords, and absurdly moreish Thistly Cross from Scotland plus many others.
Come and try a festival pint for just £4.50, or spend the afternoon making your way through the lot, in the beer garden! Available from the barn, everyone’s favourite apple based booze will flow throughout the weekend and all day Bank Holiday Monday.

There really is no better way to while away a bank holiday afternoon than relaxing in a beer garden with a delicious scrumpy in hand, munching on pig and enjoying live music.

Merrydown cider is a unique and delicious blend of the finest eating and culinary apples perfect for Christmassy mulledness! Each piece of fruit is lovingly handpicked to produce a wonderfully refreshing flavour. Unlike other ciders, only the best and juiciest eating apples are chosen for their lip-smacking taste, these are then blended with yeast from the Champagne-Ardenne region to create a premium cider with mouthwatering taste credentials. Brewed to an original Sussex recipe, one sip and you’ll soon know the secret behind Merrydown’s knowing grin.

So for the mulled cider-

Cooking Time:

5 minutes

4 people (over 18’s)

Preparation Time:

5 minutes

·       1000ml Merrydown Medium Cider

·       Splash of dark rum (optional)

·       4 cups of fruity herbal tea (orangey flavours go wel)

·       1 tbl spn soft brown sugar

·       2 clementines

·       4 or 5 cloves

·       2 cinnamon sticks

·       2 fresh bay leaves

·       4 cardamon pods

Pour the Merrydown cider into a large saucepan. Add the sugar and stir until dissolved over a gentle heat. Stud each clementine with the cloves, then cut the fruit in half and add to the pan along with the cinnamon sticks, bay leaves and cardamom pods. Heat until the almost boiling then ladle into heatproof glasses with handles.

This weekend's not only Halloween but straight after most of the Bonfire Nights are cracking out the toffee apples and hot toddys. Why not partake in your own hot alcoholic beverages at home with something a little more exciting than mulled wine?

We give you hot cider lemonade....a little less of the thick and sticky and a little more or the zingy and fruity.

Bonfire Fire night screams fireworks and toffee apples, why not blend the two together with a drop of Stoli Vodka for the ultimate sparkling cider lemonade! Simply pull together the easy-to-find ingredients and mix in a flask, ready to pour out fire-side and get the sparklers going! See image and recipe below:

Pour 50ml Stolichnaya® Premium Vodka into a saucepan on a low heat (make sure it doesn't boil)

Add 25ml fresh lemon juice

Add 12.5ml sugar syrup

Add 25ml cider, stir and heat gently.

Take off the heat and pour into tall glass or jam jar

Serve with a cinnamon stick and optional sparkler

Stolichnaya Vodka is available in all major UK retailers including Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Tesco and RRP is £19.
