Plum + Spilt Milk, found inside the newly refurbished Great Northern Hotel must be one of the newest darlings of the Kings Cross redevelopment. A dining experience that is a great contradiction over many levels. Firstly you could be forgiven to thinking this a different restaurant from day to night. Light and airy in the daytime sumptuous, cosy and dimly lit come evening making it perfect for both light lunches and business meetings as well as romantic evening dinners and special events. The other contradiction is the luxurious surroundings and the menu prices. Plum + Spilt Milk is really rather reasonable.
The food is a pleasing mixture of british fare including a healthy dose of seafood (think cockles instead of olives) for starters you can expect Dorset crab and Steak Tartare and mains currently come in the form of Red Mullet with braised fennel; Monkfish curry with Pilaf rice; Salt Marsh lamb shank hotpot; whole roast Goosnargh chicken with bread sauce to name a few.
The current menu has been put together by Mark Sargeant who has based his options on beautiful British ingredients cooked simply yet creatively.
The show stopper for us however was the puddings. We would happily turn up at Plum + Spilt Milk for pudding alone. The star of the final sweet offerings is a Baked Alaska that is made for two (although it could easily serve three). A frozen chocolate ice cream centre encased in marshmallw-y meringue that is set alight on your table.
This was nothing short of amazing.
