Walking into the Minki Cheng presentation at Elms Lesters Painting Rooms, you're instantly transported to a fantasy realm full of shiny colour and whimsical fun. An otherworldly looking floor reminiscent of both the sea bed and some sort of moon-like planet provided the backdrop for the models to stand on.

For his AW16 collection, Cheng was inspired by a nostalgic visit to his childhood memories of anime robots, warriors and guardians in Hong Kong. The theme ran clear in his use of vibrance, metallic colours and sense of fun. He believes in creating a dialogue with the audience, hoping to evoke emotion, sentimental feeling and forgotten memories.

Sparkling glitter and hard metallics were juxtaposed with the softest knit fabrics creating an interesting play between the two surfaces. Intricate textiles were used heavily with frayed edges and ribboning appliquéd throughout. These lively processes in hand-finished applications added to the fun and experimental feel of the collection. Knitted sleeves were styled pushed up to match the ruched details seen within the clothing.

There was an element of asymmetry with just one knitted warmer adorning the spindly legs of the models who stood in silver strappy heels. Their hair sleek and short with faces bare, they embodied the youthful attitude of the collection.

Gazing at the mesmerising presentation whilst futuristic, alien-like music provides a low dreamy tune in the background, you are truly in another world - the vision inside the mind of a dreamer, Minki Cheng.
