On Saturday 31 October, Angel Central Islington plays host to a gourmet Halloween party celebrating the iconic pumpkin.
The free family-friendly event takes place between 11am-4pm and will include a number of fun seasonal activities as well as a delicious portion of pumpkin soup for everyone who attends.
The pumpkin feast, organised by environmental group Hubbub, also has serious message for local people. It is estimated that every year in the UK we throw away around 18,000 tonnes of edible pumpkin at Halloween, 625,000 tonnes of that comes from Islington alone. Hubbub launched the Pumpkin Rescue initiative in 2014 to educate people about food waste and encourage them to get creative with their Halloween leftovers, instead of sending them to landfill. Now in it’s second year, there are 20 Pumpkin Rescue festival events taking place across the UK this October.
Lynne Glover, Centre Manager at Angel Central said:
“Halloween is now a major calendar date in the UK and so we are delighted to be hosting a free event at Angel Central, which all the family can enjoy. With its growth in popularity, so has the number of pumpkins that are purchased each year. Sadly, it appears that we discarding our spooky carved creations unceremoniously, when instead, we could be turning them into delicious dishes. On Saturday, we will be having lots of fun while cooking up a storm with Halloween surplus food and helping people to get the most from their pumpkins this year.”
The Pumpkin Rescue chefs will lead the cook off, providing tips and advice for left over pumpkin, they will also prepare the soup that visitors can sample for free on the day.
Other activities include a confessions booth, food waste feely boxes and people can also pose for a photo with the seaside pumpkin face board.
The event will be situated at the Angel Central Piazza, visitors can simply turn up on the day to take part, there’s no need to book.
