If you have £700 you can buy yourself a 3D printer, from Maplin. Sit and home and print out anything from mobile phone & jewellery to shoes – whatever you can find the blueprint for.
Your 3D printed items won’t come out as quick as a normal printer – gauge about half an hour for phones and a few hours for anything complicated, but it is certainly the start of something. By Christmas we predict there will be a kiddy version where they can print out bits of toys to play with. It cant be long till they get more affordable.
It seems everyone is pretty excited about them though. Since they became available there has been so many bought that there is now a 30 day waiting list. Get ready if you buy one though – this is quite an Ikea job with you having to assemble it once it arrives. Though print cartridges (a type of raw plastic) are a bargin and cheaper than some ink cartridges at £30.
If you want to learn about 3D Printing before you buy your very own head down to the Design Museum for their Late event.
Get your name on the list to grab one (if you have a spare £700) here.
